Social movements are living actors of the city, vectors of conflict that weave alliances and networks for the defence of collective rights.  Over the course of several decades, their dynamics have gradually materialised into forms of action, organisation, and communication to respond to societal transformations at large and emerging conflicts. Participatory democracy seeks hybrid spaces that transit between representation and self-organisation. How can we envision democracy based on the virtues and assets of movements? Are all movements for the defence of rights collective? What problems and risks will movements have to confront in the coming decades?

These are some of the questions the debate will address in this conversation with renowned Sociologist and Professor of Political Science Donatella della Porta and Researcher and Spokesperson for the Sindicat de Llogateres de Catalunya (Catalan Tenants’ Union) Carme Arcarazo.
