In the same way that we are facing a biodiversity crisis, today we are also confronted with the greatest threat we have ever seen to the planet’s linguistic diversity. Of the six thousand languages spoken in the world, a large majority of them are subject to minorization processes.  In the linguistic area of which Barcelona is the capital, the reduction in the social use of Catalan is readily palpable. Faced with this challenge, it is more urgent than ever that we rethink the meaning of languages and linguistic policies.

To do this, we will engage in a conversation with Jean-Rémi Carbonneau, a political scientist from Quebec and expert in the status of Catalan and Sorbian, Monica Barrièras, linguist and expert in multilingualism in the education and health sectors, and Yásnaya Elena Aguilar Gil, linguist and activist who works on the revival of indigenous languages in Mexico. The talk will be moderated by linguist Carla Ferrerós.
