Which memories make up our history? What do we decide to remember, and what to forget? And when there are as many memories as there are people remembering, how is it possible to build a collective memory? Any account of the past involves bringing some facts to light and omitting others, but when an entire generation has been forced to bury its memories, how can the next rewrite its history? A wound like war or dictatorship leaves a painful inheritance of fears and silences. Is it possible to continue moving forward without memory? Who will explain our story if we don’t?

Writer Nona Fernández was born in Chile just before Pinochet’s military coup. In her work, childhood memories intertwine with historical events in a constant exercise of inquiry into memory. Her books and plays explore the shifting, fragmentary nature of memories and claim the potential of literature to unarchive the silences of the past and make our collective memory a force to strengthen democracy.

This activity is part of the CCCB's "Talks for high school students" sessions and prior registration is required.
