Western democracy was built upon the falsehood that humans are autonomous beings, but in reality, we need to be taken care of. Most of this care tends to end up in the hands of women, who are often racialised and low-income immigrants. To counter this deeply rooted dynamic in contemporary society, Joan C. Tronto advocates for the need to build a democracy that places care at the centre and distributes responsibilities equally.
In parallel, Carl Cederström warns of the growing obsession with one’s own health and the distortions facilitated by the organisations causing illness, which do not offer changes to the underlying structures to promote a healthier lifestyle such as putting a gym in a building or setting up a nutrition programme. As such, the responsibility falls upon the individual with the aim of increasing productivity.
Cederström and Tronto will discuss capitalism, care, and time with Professor in Public Health Elena Carrillo.
