Faced with the climate collapse and accelerated loss of biodiversity, Eliane Brum, correspondent in the Amazon, sees only one solution to slowing down the destruction of our home planet: a radical change in language. Capitalism considers the major cities to be the centres of the planet as they contain the world’s stock exchanges. Brum, on the other hand, positions the centres where there is life— in nature’s strongholds despite corporate extractivism.

According to the renowned Brazilian journalist and activist, placing life at the centre means recognising and learning from the populations who live in harmony with nature without destroying their home. In this conversation with writer Gabi Martínez, Eliane Brum, from her own experience advocating for the planet’s most vibrant tropical rainforest, offers up a way to envision the future rooted in action today to guarantee some sort of quality of life for future generations of humans and other species.
