There is a consensus that political representation in liberal democracies is under great pressure. On the one hand, there is an advance of technocracy, the rule of experts, embodied in supranational forms of government and unelected counter-majoritarian institutions.
On the other hand, we are witnessing the rise of political forces that claim a special relationship with the people, something that Nadia Urbinati, with a paradoxical expression, has called "direct representation", in which a leader stands as the embodiment of a people and defends its interests by merging with the citizenry, lending his or her voice to the institutions.
Why does classical interest representation give way to technocracy and populism? What possibilities exist for rebuilding trust in the representative link? Can there be representation in a politics dominated by identity issues?
