One of the basic beliefs of our time is that societies are made up of free individuals, and that all human relationships can or should be freely chosen. But then, what is the role of the family, this institution that contains unchosen bonds and is based on age-old customs?

Is a society without families conceivable, and can the family be seen as an institution totally subject to individual freedom, or is its virtue that it acts rather as a corrective to contemporary individualism?

Does the current expansion of family forms in any way alter its function or essence? Adrià Pujol Cruells, Mar Coll and Denise Duncan will debate these questions from diverse fields such as art, activism and anthropology.
