Josep Maria Muñoz
Historian and publisher
PhD in Contemporary History from the University of Barcelona (UB), his thesis was awarded the extraordinary doctorate prize and the Gaziel prize for biographies and memoirs and was published under the title Jaume Vicens i Vives. Una biografia intel·lectual (Editions 62, 1997).
Professionally, he worked in the Mayor's Office of Barcelona City Council during a period (1987-1995) when Pasqual Maragall was Mayor. Subsequently, from 1995 to 1999, she was in charge of Cultural Services at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA), coinciding with its start-up.
In 2000, he took charge of Avenç which, under his direction, has become a cultural magazine of reference and where every month he publishes an in-depth interview. In 2007, he launched the Avenç publishing imprint, which has already published more than one hundred and fifty titles, including literature and essays, with memory as the common thread. He has also translated authors such as Balzac, Dickens and Joseph Conrad.
In 2016, he was a visiting professor at New York University (NYU), where he held the King Juan Carlos I Chair in Spain in Spanish Culture and Civilization. He has edited the volume Maragall i el govern de la Generalitat: les polítiques del canvi (RBA, 2021). He is an occasional contributor to the newspaper Ara.
