Óscar Martínez, Jairo Videa and Daniel Treminio, the three Central American investigative journalists, talk about the difficulties of working as journalists in a context of violence, where reporting the truth almost always means putting their own lives at risk.

Martínez, Videa and Treminio come from one of the most dangerous and violent regions in the world for journalists: Central America. In countries such as El Salvador or Nicaragua, it is the governments themselves, when not directly the drug traffickers or gang members, who control information and, if necessary, persecute, imprison and even murder journalists, thus turning the work of investigating and informing into an act of high risk, increasingly difficult to carry out. How to inform when no one is interested in the truth? What value does the word have when violence becomes a daily occurrence?

The Salvadoran Óscar Martínez is editor-in-chief of Elfaro.net and author of Los muertos y el periodista (Anagrama, 2021). Jairo Videa and Juan Daniel Treminio, both Nicaraguan journalists, are co-founders of the digital newspaper Coyuntura and are currently part of Catalan PEN’s Hosted Writer Programme. In this session, they talk with journalist and writer Álvaro Colomer about the challenges of the profession in contexts where the lives of journalists are highly threatened.
