Masha Gessen, journalist, and Carolin Emcke, philosopher, discuss the need to construct new imaginaries of the future in a context marked by the war in Ukraine and the rise of hate speech and authoritarianism.

In the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, war has erupted forcefully in Europe, shaking the imaginaries of peace and freedom and with an escalation of the discourse of war that has awakened fears relegated to the old continent's past. The return of war raises questions within democratic regimes that challenge us and invite us to think about the place of hate speech, violence and authoritarianism within and beyond our borders. How can we keep the conversation going about the future we want for our societies in this context? How do the new forms of fascism differ, and what can we learn from the past in order to confront them?

Masha Gessen is a journalist at The New Yorker and after decades of writing about the dangers of totalitarianism and the political situation in them native Russia, they have spent the last few months researching and reporting on the Russian invasion, going on the ground several times. For her part, philosopher and journalist Carolin Emcke, author of Contra el Odio (Taurus, 2018), has covered different war conflicts throughout her career and has studied in depth the functioning of hate speech in Western democracies.
