As a response to the silence surrounding the life stories of Africans and people of African descent in the Iberian peninsula, the research project “Black Spain. Journey towards blackness in space-time” reclaims the existence of stories trapped in documents, literature, music, domestic life, oral traditions, and a large array of popular culture elements from the 15th century to modern day.  This material comprises a Black Archive in constant creation.

In this theatrical piece, researcher Tania Adam and director Adeline Flaun compose a visual and sound collage based on these rescued stories. They refer to ancestral accounts to bring to life stories, events, moments, and people. The stories overlap and time collapses to reveal the similarities in the lives of Black people from the 16th century until today. The voice interpretations of real accounts elicit a spiral of silence, oppression, and violence but also of agency and resilience.

A part of the Archives can be seen during the Manifesta 15 Biennial at the headquarters of Gustau Gili: Arxius Negres: Fragments of an anticolonial metropolis.
