Martin Sticker

Philosopher specialized in Kant, University of Bristol

From a historical point of view, Dr. Martin Sticker, Senior Professor of Ethics at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Bristol, has mainly focused his attention on Immanuel Kant. He is systematically interested in the question of what is the correct or best moral theory. He works on the differences between consequentialism and Kantian ethical theory and investigates whether it is possible to reconcile different types of ethical theories. He is also interested in the duty of helping and moral overburdening, especially within the context of global poverty and justice. In addition, he examines applied ethics, political philosophy, climate ethics, Hegel, Aristotle, and the philosophy of the Enlightenment.

A large part of his past research focused on the role of the pre-Socratic perspective for academic philosophy and on the role philosophy must play for non-philosophers.  He approached these topics largely from a historical perspective (mainly Kant).
