He obtained a B.A. (1999) and a Master (2002) in Philosophy from the American University of Beirut (AUB), and in 2021 he earned a PhD in Philosophy from the Lebanese University.  Since 2003, he has been working as a full-time professor at the AUB Department of Humanities and Sciences, teaching classes in the Department of Philosophy and in the Critical Humanities for Liberal Arts programme. His current research focuses on primitive Arab-Islamic philosophy— with particular emphasis on al-Kindi—, existentialism, and the role of language in shaping our experienced world.

In addition to his teaching, since March 2014, Hani Hassan has been the director of the Tomorrow’s Leaders Programme at the American University of Beirut. Sponsored by the U.S.-Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) of the US State Department, Tomorrow’s Leaders Programme offers undergraduate and graduate scholarships for exceptional students from underprivileged backgrounds who represent the cultural and geographical diversity of the Middle East and Northern Africa. In line with this, he has worked closely with and mentored over 220 academics in the entire region thanks to his academic and civic trips aimed at developing leadership at the American University of Beirut.
